WHAT'S FOR DINNER: Comfort food, beef sushi bowl (and cake), Meat the Need charity, home-cooking videos by Kiwi chefs

This week on What’s For Dinner? we share a delicious Teriyaki beef sushi bowl, our favourite slow-cooker recipes, and easy one-pot recipes. Learn about the new Meat the Need charity and get inspired by cooking videos by top Kiwi chefs.

Creative cooking with tender Teriyaki beef

This is an exciting new recipe in two parts. First, cook our melt-in-your-mouth slow-cooked Teriyaki beef and then follow the instructions for the Teriyaki beef sushi bowl to create the ultimate deconstructed sushi bowl. Make sure you add plenty of pickled ginger and mayonnaise. Serve with a small bowl of soy and wasabi for the ultimate Japanese dining experience.

Cooking tips: Cook once, eat twice (or trice): you can use any left-over slow-cooked Teriyaki beef to surprise your dinner guests with a sushi cake!

Meat the Need - New Zealand farmers feeding New Zealand families

The new national charity Meat the Need wants to support Kiwis who are hit hard by the COVID-19 lockdown and the resulting economic fall-out. Meat the Need connects farmers, meat processors and food banks in a way that will allow food banks to plan around receiving regular amounts of meat and will also help farmers to give at seasonal times when they are able.

You can also jump on board and help with donations. Beef + Lamb New Zealand are proud to support this charity on behalf of New Zealand farmers. Watch the video and learn more on their website meattheneed.org.

Our favourite slow cooker and casserole recipes

We love slow cookers not only for how easy they make meal preparation, but also for the amazingly tender and flavourful beef and lamb dishes we can cook with them. Less-expensive cuts are turned into the most delicious and nutritious comfort food. These recipes are perfect for this time of the year, and for warm fuzzies during lockdown.

Top Kiwi chefs are serving up home-cooking videos

During the lockdown Kiwi chefs haven’t been able to work from home, but many top chefs whose restaurants have temporarily closed due to the coronavirus outbreak are serving up the next best thing: sharing free home-cooking videos on social media. Here are some of our favourites to get you started.

Lockdown dinners: the best one-pot recipes

Probably the last thing anyone wants to do after dinner is dishes. These incredible one-pot (or one-pan) recipes will satisfy your comfort food cravings while cutting down on the cleaning up. They’re especially suited for a quick weeknight dinner or when you only have 30 minutes to get something on the table.
